School travel is the perfect opportunity to stretch creative thought and build an entire itinerary around a specific theme. This can actually make it easier to design a trip, helping you narrow down an overwhelming number of amazing attractions to several that complement each other. Cities like Washington DC, New York City, and Orlando lend themselves easily to exciting themes. Here’s a handful of group tours customized with this in mind.
One of our favorite, black history tours showcase civil rights activists and the events that shaped the movement. They help groups discover churches, schools, and libraries built by free black Americans. Students from all over the US can walk the Black Heritage Trail in Boston or similar sites in Atlanta and Washington DC, learning firsthand how much African Americans contributed to early American communities and progress.
See the lights of Broadway surrounding Times Square at night, a favorite attraction for New York City educational tours. And with this theme, you can watch a Broadway performance every night plus take a Broadway Workshop. Sessions focus on acting, choreography, and the technical side of production, and they’re taught by Broadway professionals.
This is another popular NYC tour or for travel to exciting cities like LA. You can even take this tour across the pond to the fashion capital of the world – Paris. Fashion in New York City includes behind-the-scenes tours at Tommy Hilfiger and Hugo Boss. Visit fashion institutes, famous retail districts, and the company closets of world-class designers. The theme is an exciting way to get students excited about fashion as an art and as a powerful industry.
Visit Washington DC and design your tour around the topic so prevalent in popular culture today: Law and order. Attractions include the National Law Enforcement Museum and Memorial and the Museum of Crime and Punishment. You can drive by Watergate and the FBI J. Edgar Hoover building. Learn all things espionage in the International Spy Museum. Or, go straight to the top and take a mile-long tour of the headquarters for the Department of Defense, otherwise known as the Pentagon.
Both Los Angeles and New York City make it easy to build a tour around this popular theme. In New York groups enjoy the Central Park Movie Walking Tour and a similar TV and Movie Sites Tour throughout Greenwich Village and the rest of Manhattan. Planet Hollywood and Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum make great additions as well. In Los Angeles, you can visit Hollywood itself, from Grauman’s Chinese Theater and the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame to the Kodak Theater, famous for the Annual Academy Awards and the American Idol finale.
Faith
Visit the Precious Moments Chapel in Missouri, Holy Land theme park in Orlando, or temples and famous churches throughout the country. Faith-based tours are a great choice for youth groups and other programs, allowing young people to explore the foundations of their faith or the beautiful expressions of it.
There are many more possibilities when designing the perfect tour for your school group. Consider themes in art, American history, music, or volunteering. Maybe you’ll think of your own unique theme.
